Where history and culture meet

Discover one of the most special monuments in Esztergom, where memories of the past and the real present cultural life are alive in one space. The former Ottoman place of worship now awaits visitors as an open, welcoming cultural and community space on the bank of the Danube, in the heart of the city historical district.

A special place in the heart of Esztergom

Within the walls of the mosque, you can simultaneously feel the peaceful silence and the presence of living culture. The clear spaces, the proportions of the building and the surrounding historical environment create an atmosphere that slows down time and gives space for immersion – whether it is a short visit or a cultural program.

In a few words about the mosque

The Esztergom Mosque – also known as the Özicseli Hajji Ibrahim Mosque – takes place on the bank of the Danube for more than four hundred years. The building is a rare monument of Ottoman-era architecture in Hungary, still visible today, and is uniquely connected to the history of the city of Esztergom. The mosque specificity is in two-levels creation: its lower level was part of the medieval castle wall, and the prayer space was built on the next level above. The interior still makes available representative elements of Ottoman architecture, including the ruins of the prayer room (mihrab).

Historical surroundings

Right next to the building are the Mill Bastion and the rebuilt Veprech Tower, which further enrich the historical significance of the site. In the tower once a special water-lifting structure worked, and the surrounding area is now a spectacular part of Esztergom that is tempting to explore.

In a new role: cultural and community space

Following the renovation, the mosque no longer serves a religious function, but rather functions as a cultural exhibition space and community space. Its aim is to form a bridge between cultures and provide space for dialogue between past and present, East and West, to present the cultural heritage of the Islamic world, and to create a connection point to Hungarian historical and artistic traditions.

Programs and events

The cultural life of the mosque is mainly active from April to October. During this period, concerts, exhibitions, thematic evenings, and various cultural programs await those visitors, who are interested. The aim of the events is to present the values of different cultures in an experiential way and to provide a long-lasting experience for every visitor.
