The spa culture of Esztergom has a long history, which is proven by the fact that the Saint Stephen Beach Swimming Pool opened its doors to the domestic traveling in 1912. It was the first in Hungary. Its spacious, green spaces offer a refreshing sight in the city, and its historical beauty entices people to get to know it. Everyone can find a shady resting place under tall, leafy trees. In addition to the swimming pool, there is also a large sun terrace where guests can tan. From this Art Nouveau-style sun terrace, you can clearly see the dome of the Basilica, the chapel of Saint Thomas Hill and the classicist Spa hotel, which was built in 1842. Several famous person stayed here, including István Széchenyi, Ferenc Liszt and Lajos Kossuth, who – as reported by Zsigmond Móricz – declared such a person who was present on the famous day when Kossuth recruited in Esztergom for the 1848 war of independence. Blaha Lujza, the nation’s “nightingale”, at the age of 8 had her first performance hosted by the Spa hotel.
The Beach Pool contains the 110-year-old indoor swimming pool declared as monument, moreover a 50-meter beach pool with cabins and the steam bath building.
The iron-sulfur-magnesium water of the spa was declared to have medicinal properties based on a survey carried out in 1907. Its temperature ranges between 25 and 29 °C and it originates from a depth of approximately 600 meters, at the foot of Szent Tamás-hegy.

Due to the popularity of the beach, since 2000, the outdoor pool has been covered when the cold weather is coming, so that everyone can comfortably fit in out of the high season.
The 50-meter standard-competition pool of the beach spa hosts many swimming competitions. Swimmers, triathletes, and water polo players train in the swimming pool all year round, and from autumn to spring, kayakers, canoeists, rugby players, rowers, and wrestlers enjoy the developing power of swimming, which affects the whole body during the foundation period.
We can find charming pictures of Mihály Babits and his family at the entrance to the Beach. The poet regularly visited the beach bath with his wife and daughter, and several photographs show the family bathing experience.
